Spotlight on Medical Writing
Interview with Priyal Sharma:
Senior PMCF Medical Writer
An introduction to Priyal
Priyal, tell us a bit about yourself?
I hold a PhD in Biotechnology and transitioned into medical writing after completing my studies. I have four years’ experience in medical writing and for the last two years have worked at Purdie Pascoe as Senior PMCF Medical Writer. I’ve developed a strong ability to communicate complex scientific information clearly, working on a variety of projects within the medical field.
Outside of medical writing, what do you enjoy doing?
I love traveling, painting, and spending time with family and friends. Painting allows me to relax and express my creativity, while I deeply value meaningful relationships and enjoy investing emotionally in those around me.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be, and why?
I would choose the ability to teleport. It would allow me to travel freely and stay connected with loved ones, without the constraints of time and distance, creating the perfect balance for my love of adventure and maintaining relationships.
Priyal’s Perspective - Deep Dive
What inspired you to become a medical writer?
During my PhD, I learnt the importance of effectively communicating complex scientific research. This led to my passion for medical writing, providing the opportunity to translate research findings into accessible content, making a tangible impact in the healthcare space.
What benefits does an in-house medical writer bring to an insights agency?
Having an in-house medical writer brings significant value to an insights agency by ensuring all medical content - such as clinical survey protocols, Post-Market Clinical Follow-up (PMCF) reports, and study outputs—is clear, accurate, and aligned with regulatory expectations. Working closely with cross-functional teams, in-house writers enhance the quality and consistency of deliverables while streamlining workflows and improving turnaround times. Their deep understanding of the goals, processes, and client needs allows them to anticipate requirements, respond quickly to changes, and maintain strong communication throughout a project. For example, in the context of PMCF reporting, in-house writers proactively develop templates, leverage experience and collaborate continuously to ensure timely, tailored, and high-quality outputs.
As a Medical Writer within our PMCF team at Purdie Pascoe, what kind of work are you regularly involved in?
I prepare medical device documents related to PMCF surveys, including PMCF survey protocols / plans and PMCF survey reports. From reviewing client objectives and clinical documentation, I help provide a clear outline of the survey scope, methodology and analysis plan with the protocols / plans. The reports bring together large datasets and align those with the survey objectives and endpoints, providing our clients with a report they can use to support their MDR submissions.
How do you ensure accuracy and clarity when communicating complex medical information?
I ensure accuracy by conducting thorough research, cross-checking facts and data, and aligning content with scientific and regulatory standards. To maintain clarity, I simplify complex information, focus on key messages, and use a logical flow and structure. Clear visuals such as simple tables and accessible language help enhance audience understanding. This combination ensures content is both easy to follow and accurate.
Can you share an example of a particularly rewarding project you've worked on?
A rewarding project was preparing the PMCF survey protocol for one of our clients who manufacturers a resuscitator device. Within the protocol design, I helped determine the safety and performance endpoints and how best to fill specific clinical gaps for specific patient populations. The data gathered from the survey was used within their EU MDR submission and ultimately resulted in the device receiving a CE mark approval for the device. Knowing my contribution played a direct role in their success was incredibly fulfilling.
What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your role?
Balancing precision with clarity can be challenging, as simplifying complex information without losing essential meaning is key. Additionally, working with tight deadlines while maintaining high quality, precise content requires effective time management.
You work with the wider PMCF team at Purdie Pascoe, what role does collaboration play in your work?
Collaboration is crucial. I work closely with statisticians, and project managers to ensure the accuracy and alignment of our medical content with regulatory standards. Effective collaboration also helps streamline workflows.
What most excites you about the work you do?
The ability to make a direct impact on patient safety and product development through supporting medical device manufacturers comply with the stringent PMCF requirements under the MDR, is the most exciting part of my job. The dynamic and supportive environment at Purdie Pascoe keeps me motivated and engaged in every project.
